An Analysis of Ashley in Gone With the Wind From the Perspective of Jung’s Archetype Theory_

Abstract
Gone With the Wind, the first published novel of Margaret Mitchell, became a great success once published in 1936. Its sales figure exceeded many publication records in America, and this novel became a best-seller in many countries. Basing on the American Civil War, the novel presents the changes in Southerners’ life brought by the war and the changes of characters’ fate, revolving around Scarlett O’Hara’s relationships with other characters. This research intends to reveal the causes of Ashley’s pessimistic attitude towards life through interpreting this novel from the perspective of Jung’s Archetype Theory. With a detailed analysis of his individuation process, including his persona, shadow, and anima, and an analysis of his failure in individuation, the research indicates that Ashley’s tragedy results from the unbalanced development of his persona, shadow, and anima, as well as the dramatically changed environment due to the American Civil War.
