An Analysis of Jia Baoyu’s Rebellious Language in the English Version of Hong Lou Meng from the Perspective of Skopotheorie_英语论文

Abstract
From the perspective of Hans Vermeer 's skopotheorie theory, this thesis studies Jia Baoyu's rebellious language translation in David Hawkes' translated version of Hong Lou Meng. Among Chinese classical novels, Hong Lou Meng is one of the most impressive one. Also, Hong Lou Meng is the best literatural work during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
In Hong Lou Meng, Jia Baoyu is a typical anti-feudal rebel. This thesis focuses on the rebellious language translation of Jia Baoyu, the core character in Hong Lou Meng, and from the perspective of skopotheorie theory, discusses how the translator chooses the target language to reproduce the rebellious language effect the speaker tries to convey.
A number of scholars are interested in studying the translation of names as well as the translation of ancient poems in Hong Lou Meng during these decades. But studies in translation of character language seem to be rarely seen. There is no doubt that this kind of research can really deepen and improve the research relating to Hong Lou Meng. Whether the translator can reproduce the rebellious language effect the speaker is trying to convey is a question worthed discussing. As a descendant of Jia family, Jia Baoyu was born in a distinguished family, but his thought and individuality encouraged him to betray his family. How to choose appropriate translation strategies to reproduce the implied meaning of Jia Baoyu's rebellious language is a meaningful research topic.
This thesis is a qualitative study, which is combined theoretical deduction and case study together to better study the translation of character language in Hong Lou Meng. According to skopotheorie theory, in the process of translation, the purpose of translation is determined to be the expected purpose of the target reader and the translator, so the corresponding translation methods and strategies are selected. Then, according to the principles of skopotheorie theory, this thesis studies how the translator expresses the implied meaning and the implication in the context of the target text. This thesis will select typical translation examples to analyze and demonstrate how the translator adopts appropriate translation strategies to convey the implied meaning of the speaker.
