本论文先以《悲惨世界》的故事情节为出发点，通过对人物解析的方面来研究雨果写作时表达的创作意图，了解作者灵魂深处真正想要传递给时代的信息。研究人物性格与时代的更深层次关系，由此解析不同人物形象所代表的深层意义。小说描写人类与邪恶之间不懈的斗争，人类本性是纯洁善良的，将一同走向幸福，但要经过苦难的历程。雨果还在作品中揭露了当时残酷不公的法典和秩序，猛烈抨击了那种人们饿死可以而偷面包却要坐牢的社会制度，谴责了那些安于现状和铁石心肠的市民在面对处于困境中的他人时的那种袖手旁观的冷漠态度。从研究人物性格与时代的更深层次关系，由此解析不同人物形象所代表的深层意义。
