Abstract

Wuthering Heights, a masterpiece written by Emily Bronte, depicts the story of love and revenge between the hero Heathcliff and the heroine Catherine. It has been widely appreciated for its unique writing technique, vivid portrayal of the characters, fancy imagination, and profound theme, etc. This paper attempts to probe into this novel from a different aspect by analyzing three main conflicts presented by the authoress, namely, the conflicts between individuals and society, between individuals and within individual. The thesis ends with the conclusion that by disclosing the miserable life of the Victorian age and its oppression on human nature, the authoress seeks to deliver her grand humanitarian thought: people should learn to forgive since the virtuous side of human nature is bound to defeat the vicious one.
