Abstract

Written by Theodore Dreiser, Sister Carrie is the early naturalist representative in America. Aspiring to live a better life, Carrie, the heroine moves to Chicago to chase her dream. To get rid of hunger, poverty and joblessness, she successively becomes the mistress of two men and gradually loses herself in the luxurious life. Although she becomes a famous actress in the end, she loses her mind and life direction. This novel embodies a benefits-driven society, where people, full of doubt and anxiety, abandon traditional morals and even betray friends and families. This thesis aims to explore interpersonal relations in a consumerist society, mainly focusing on the relations of families, lovers, and friends so as to reveal a kind of immoral relations.
