Abstract

Heart of the Darkness, the most influential British modernist novel written by Joseph Conrad, shows the reader the prospect of the hinterland of the colonial Africa through a voyage along the Congo River. This modernist novel mainly demonstrates the harsh and heartless treatments that native Africans suffer from European colonists, but deeply exploring the meaning behind, what Conrad is most concerned about is the crisis of modern civilization, European colonialism and the integrity of human nature in the context of modern society. By using symbolism, irony, comparison and other writing features he is good at, Conrad has enriched the connotation and implication of the novel. The dramatic arrangement to reveal the theme is another important writing feature for shaping this excellent work.
