Abstract

The Adventure of Tom Sawyer is a representative work of Mark Twain in the 19th century. The novel describes the title character’s growth experience in the town, including his life, his love and his adventure and presents us a smart, heroic and adventurous image of a teenage in America at that time. By depicting the life of Tom Sawyer, Mark Twain intends to satirize the hypocrisy of the capitalist society and disclose the moral and legal corruption in the United States. This essay researches on the personality and experience of Tom Sawyer by analyzing him respectively as a downy bird, as a hero and as an adventurer so as to explore Mark Twain’s unique characterization, thematic concern and artistic value.
