摘要

《理智与情感》是简·奥斯汀最重要的作品之一。该小说讲述了两个姐妹的爱情故事。本小说的两个女主人公在性格上表现出很大的不同，姐姐埃莉诺总是很镇定，很理性，然而妹妹玛丽安娜通常冲动鲁莽，不计后果。与这两位女主人公性格上差异息息相关的是两人在婚姻上的不同的选择。在婚姻问题上玛丽安娜感性、情绪化，而埃莉诺则是理智地对待婚姻。与她们各自的性格一致的是她们不同的婚姻选择。这种差异同时也造成了他们不同的爱情经历。小说的结局展现了姐姐的理智拯救了她和妹妹，免于遭受由冲动的婚姻选择所带来的那个时代的女性可能经历的困难甚至是灾难。本研究将分析女性的婚姻观，进而探索作者的婚姻观。本文旨在于探索两个女性性格差异与婚姻选择差异之间的联系。同时探讨蕴藏在这些差异背后小说作者的创作动机。

Abstract

Sense and Sensibility, one of Jane Austen’s most important novels, narrates the two sisters’ love stories. The two heroines of the novel are quite different in personalities, the elder sister Elinor always composed and rational while the younger sisters usually impulsive and reckless. In close relation to the two heroines’ different personalities are their different marital choices. Marianne treats love emotionally while Elinor treats love rationally. Their different marital choices in line with their respective personalities bring them quite different love experiences. The ending of the story shows that it is the elder sister’s sense that saves herself and her sister from troubles or even disasters that young women of that age would possibly experience due to unscrupulous marital decisions. The paper will analyze the two heroines’ views of marriage as a way to explore the writer’s view on marriage. This essay aims at exploring the relationship between differences in the heroines’ personalities and their martial choices, and the author’s creative motive as conveyed by the differences.
