摘要

本文尝试用美国社会心理学家马斯洛的需求层次理论对英国作家威廉•萨默塞特•毛姆的小说《面纱》的女主人公在婚姻过程中的行为进行解读，从低级到高级分别是：生理需求、安全需求、归属与爱的需求、尊重需求和自我实现的需求。这部小说是毛姆最早创作的一部以情节发展为特征的小说，也是毛姆创作的第一部长篇小说，到目前为止，关于这部小说的研究主要集中在生态批评，后殖民主义和女主人公的塑造等方面，而从需求的角度进行的研究相对较少，也正是这一特点为这篇论文研究面纱提供了可能。小说中，爱慕虚荣的女主人公凯蒂在婚姻中出轨却在丈夫的爱中慢慢回归婚姻的正轨，开始真正寻找自己的价值和幸福生活。凯蒂可能并没有意识到自己内心的需求，但是不管如何，这些需求都在影响着凯蒂的行为。
