A Review of Hardy’s Fatalism in Tess of the D’Urbervilles_

Abstract
Thomas Hardy is an outstanding British writer in the 19th century and 20th century, and Tess of the D’Urbervilles is his representative work that has surpassed the matter of time and it always remains fresh since its publication. Tess, the heroine of the book, has become one of the most beautiful and moving images of women in the world.
This thesis employs tragedy consciousness, combined with the concepts of coincidence and symbolism which are the usual writing techniques of fatalism to analyze Hardy’s fatalism and the deep meaning of Hardy’s Fatalism writing style. This thesis holds that Hardy’s fatalism is not the pure fatalism. Hardy does not truly believe in fatalism, but he wants to criticize the Victorian patriarchal society and the injustice of social law by using fatalism. This thesis aims to provide insights into Hardy’s fatalism and provide insights into works of Victorian Era in contemporary society.
