An Analysis of Androgyny in To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf_

Abstract
As one of the most famous women writers in Britain in the twentieth century, Virginia Woolf is also considered as a pioneer of modernism and feminism. In 1928, Virginia Woolf proposed the literary theory of androgyny in A Room of One’s Own. Her representative work, To the Lighthouse has aroused extensive attention since its publication .
Based on the text of To the Lighthouse, this thesis will employ Woolf’s androgyny theory, combined with her feminist view to analyze the images and personalities of Mr and Mrs Ramsay. Moreover, Woolf puts an emphasis on Lily’s mental activities and changes during her creation, trying to reveal female artists’ struggle and fight in a society dominated by male. Woolf holds a unique view towards the relationships between male and female. She goes beyond the simple feminism by admitting women’s traditional role, furthermore, she advocates pursuing an ideal harmony coexistence and treating the integration of two genders as the ultimate goal of feminism. This thesis aims to provide an insight into the harmonious state of male and female.
