摘要

作为1923年普利策文学奖的获得者，薇拉·凯瑟被美国文学批评界认为是20世纪美国最杰出的小说家之一。《莎菲拉和女奴》是她的最后一部，也是唯一一部与南北战争前反对奴隶制有关的小说。本文运用霍米·巴巴的后殖民理论，通过对薇拉·凯瑟的作品《莎菲拉和女奴》中莎菲拉奴隶主和黑人奴隶两者的矛盾状态、黑人奴隶对殖民者的模拟等方面进行分析与解读，对小说中的殖民统治解构和其话语颠覆过程进行分析，以进一步阐释殖民主义终究崩塌离析的命运。而文本中的第三空间的构建则折射出了新的非二元对立格局的形成是大势所趋的，使得以莎菲拉为中心的殖民主义统治能被有效解构。基于对文本的多重解读之下，该研究揭示了作者对奴隶制的反对态度、对其背后错综复杂的殖民关系的关注和对构建多元平等社会的期望。
