摘要
《面纱》是一部以中国为背景、异域色彩浓厚的作品。毛姆在《面纱》中描绘了形形色色的中西方人物和中国风景、习俗、文化,从而构建了原始、落后的殖民地形象和辉煌、神秘的异国世外桃源形象。毛姆作品中看似矛盾的中国形象由个人因素和社会因素导致,毛姆对古中国的仰慕与亲身游历中国后的失落,使毛姆难以避免东方主义的偏见,同时,西方学者的集体无意识和东方主义的“他者”和“女性”构建,也使他对中国怀有与之类似的先入之见。只有以更客观地心态正确看待中国形象,才能消融东西方文明的冲突,促进跨文化交际和中国文化走出去。
