摘要 

美国通识教育起源于博雅教育，其发展和创新至今仍在继续。在过去的两个多世纪里，美国大学在不断研究和发展通识教育。通过梳理美国大学通识教育的起源和发展中的重要事件和人物，美国通识教育可以分为以下几个阶段：艾略特早期尝试的“选修制度”，赫钦斯进行改进的“名著计划”，科南特正式发表的里程碑“自由社会中的通识教育”，德里克博克和罗索夫斯基继续进行改革的“核心课程”，以及现在仍在继续的通识教育改革。阐述了美国大学在不同历史时期下的通识教育改革方式和理念变化，探究各个时期改革的主要原因和历史推动因素。研究美国通识教育的发展历程，对我国高校的通识教育发展具有一定的参考价值。
