摘要

《使女的故事》是加拿大“文学女王”玛格丽特·阿特伍德1984年所写的一部推测性小说。在小说中，阿特伍德运用了丰富的象征意象，它们成为小说情节、故事发展的重要线索。本文从社会历史批评理论的现实性、作者的倾向性及社会效应三个维度，对其中的主要意象进行分析和解读，从而揭示其背后阿特伍德对现实社会中的宗教、生态、权力与阶级统治和女性主义等多方面的反思，进一步挖掘作品的社会语义和作用：在阿特伍德笔下的父权制阶级社会——基列国中，统治阶级实施政治强权、扼杀人性、消灭思想，恰是当时美国宗教右翼原教旨主义运动的极端化现实写照；基列社会下受压迫女性在自然中得到的慰藉，并与之建立的独特联系，则体现了阿特伍德去人类中心主义、去男权主义的生态意识和女性关怀；而基列国的黑暗统治一方面引起人们对基列型社会的恐惧与厌恶，又唤起对希望和自由的珍惜；其最终的覆灭或许正是现实世界中人们对存在或建立所谓理想社会的悲观表达。
