摘要

《北方与南方》是英国小说家伊丽莎白·盖斯凯尔(1810--1865)所写的一部长篇小说。这部小说，是十九世纪英国第一次工业革命的写实记录，展示了十九世纪工业化时期英国南方与北方的发展差异。本文以加布里埃尔·佐伦的空间叙事理论切入，从物理空间，社会空间，小说文本空间三个维度阐释本小说空间叙事特点。首先，本研究通过对三个物理空间: 赫尔斯通、伦敦和米尔顿的分析解读故事的社会背景和其对应的人物的社会空间。 其次，从个体和整体两个方面对小说社会空间进行探讨。通过研究主人公(玛格丽特和桑顿先生)的社会空间，分析他们在不同的社会空间中社会地位的变化及其所反映的社会发展趋势。 最后，从语言选择、文本时序、文本视角选择三个方面对小说的文本空间进行分析，解读作者如何以弥尔顿为故事发展的主要地点，以玛格丽特的空间移动为主线，为读者营造一个有着清晰顺序的叙事空间，并以全知的视角展现人物丰富的心理空间。读者由此将在对小说的空间叙事结构有更深刻认识的基础上进一步挖掘《北方与南方》的深层主题意义和文学价值。
