A Contrastive Analysis of Chinese and British Wealth Views in Hawkes' Version of The Story of the Stone

摘要

财富是一个贯穿古今中外的反映社会发展程度的重要存在。作为文化价值观的一部分，财富观是指人们对于财富的态度，包括对金钱和富人的态度。不同国家的文化和社会背景衍生出的财富观也不尽相同。中国人具有崇尚道义和保守的特点，而英国人对于个人财富观的评价没有刻板的标准，其财富观是多元的。这些差异在霍克斯的《红楼梦》英译本中得到了充分的体现。

本文分为三个部分。第一部分介绍了财富观的定义、内涵和中英财富观各自的特点。第二部分介绍了曹雪芹和霍克斯的生平以及两人的作品，并分析了两部作品所反映出来的中英财富观。第三部分从分析作者和译者对《红楼梦》中代表人物（王熙凤、刘姥姥、巧姐、贾母和林黛玉）的偏好性入手，阐述了中英财富观的更多不同之处。本文作者发现：英国人对于个人财富观的态度比较包容，中国人则相对保守；中国人的财富观中包含着一定程度的不安全感和虚无主义，而英国人由于宗教信仰等因素，对财富的追求较为理性、乐观和自由。

Abstract

Wealth is an important factor that reflects the degree of social development ll the time around the world. As a part of the cultural values, the view of wealth refers to people’s attitudes towards money and wealthy people. Different views of wealth have derived from different countries’ cultural and social backgrounds. Chinese people are more conservative and respect morality, while British people’s evaluation of individual view of wealth has no rigid standards, that is to say, the British view of wealth is diversified. These differences are also found in Hawkes' The Story of the Stone.

This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part introduces the definition of view of wealth, its connotation, and the characteristics of the view of wealth of China and Britain. The second part introduces Cao Xueqin and Hawkes as well as their works, and analyzes the Chinese and British view of wealth reflected in the two works. The third part elaborates the differences between Chinese and British view of wealth by analyzing the author's and translator's preferences towards the representative figures (Wang Xifeng, Liu Laolao, Qiao Jie, Jia Mu and Lin Daiyu). The author of this thesis finds out that British people are more tolerant to personal view of wealth, while Chinese people are relatively conservative; Chinese people’s view of wealth includes insecurity and nihilism, while British people’s pursuit of wealth is more rational, optimistic and free owing to their religious beliefs.
