An Analysis of Vague Language in President Trump’s First Address to a Joint Session of Congress in 2017

摘要

2017年2月28日，美国总统唐纳德·特朗普发表了上任以来的首次国会演讲，该演讲不仅助力特朗普在民众中树立良好形象,而且其影响力在社会各界发挥着积极作用。模糊语作为一种重要的沟通策略，有着独特的灵活性与不确定性。在“2017年国会首次演讲”中，特朗普大量使用模糊语来传达他的政治主张，从而实现他的政治意图。本论文以特朗普总统“2017年国会首次演讲”为研究对象，分析其中的模糊语，并探究其目的、功能和意义。

本论文分为四个部分。第一部分介绍特朗普总统“2017年国会首次演讲”的背景和其主要内容。第二部分分析模糊语的定义、分类和功能。第三部分从词语、句子和段落三个方面解析特朗普总统“2017年国会首次演讲”中的模糊语，以研究模糊语在增强表达、巩固权威、礼貌交际和自我保护方面等方面的意义。第四部分探究模糊语对其他美国总统和普通人及现实社会的重要意义。

Abstract

On 28th February, 2017, American president Donald Trump made the first address to a Joint Session of Congress in 2017 since taking office. The address helps Trump establish a good image among citizens, and its influence plays an active role in the society. Vague language, as an important communicative strategy, has its unique flexibility and uncertainty. In in first address to a joint session of congress, Trump massively uses vague language to convey his political policy so as to achieve his political purpose. This paper mainly studies president Trump’s first address to a joint session of Congress, analyzing vague language in the address, and researching its purpose, function and significance.

This paper is divided into four parts. In the first part, the background and the main content of president Trump’s first address to a joint Congress in 2017 is given a brief introduction. The second part introduces the definition and the function of vague language. In the third part, vague language in Trump’s first address is analyzed from three aspects, including word, sentence and paragraph, which aims to study the purpose of vague language in many fields, such as enhancement of expression, consolidation of authority, polite communication and self-protection. In the final part, the significance of vague language to other American presidents, normal people and realistic society is explored.
