从《牧师的黑面纱》人物形象塑造解析霍桑的清教观_英语论文

A Study of Hawthorne’s Puritan View from the Image-Building in The Minister’s Black Veil    

摘要

霍桑是美国文学史上举足轻重的人物，他的作品大多带有明显的清教主义色彩。对他作品的研究非常多.相对于对其长篇小说的研究，对其短篇小说的研究远远不够.基于此，本论文以霍桑短篇小说为研究对象深入剖析作者的清教观。《牧师的黑面纱》是霍桑短篇小说中最具有代表性的作品之一，就如霍桑其他的短篇小说一样，《牧师的黑面纱》也是围绕一个具有象征意义的标志物展开的，即黑面纱，那副使胡波牧师与外界隔离开来的黑面纱。而这副黑面纱所象征的即是清教主义中的原罪思想，是胡波牧师所固守的清教主义思想。但霍桑所处的社会环境又决定了霍桑不可能脱离清教主义的影响，所以，霍桑有着十分矛盾的清教观，即对清教主义思想既批判又继承的清教观。

Abstract

Hawthorne is a pivotal figure in the history of American literature, his works mostly with obvious color of puritanism. There are many studies of his works. Compared with the research of his novels, the study of his short stories is not much enough. Based on this, this paper takes Hawthorne’s short story as the research object to explore the Puritan view of the author. The Minister’s Black Veil is one of the most representative works of Hawthorne’s short stories, as well as other Hawthorne’s short story, The Minister’s Black Veil is built around a single symbol, the black veil, which Mr. Hooper wears to hide his face from the world. The black veil represents the thought of original sin in puritanism, and this kind of thought is what Mr. Hooper persists. This paper is based on the analysis of character Mr. Hooper, pointing out that the root cause of his misery life is entrenched ideas of puritanism, which indirectly reflects Hawthorn’s criticism and lashes to the dehumanizing pressures of puritanism. But it is impossible for Hawthorne to be not influenced by Puritanism in his social environment, and Hawthorne’s puritan view is contradictory, which is both critical and inherited.
