A study of Sexism in the English language

摘要

性别歧视是一种非常普遍的现象，它不仅体现在社会生活的许多方面，也反映在语言的使用中。随着女权运动的发展，越来越多的语言学者开始研究语言中的性别歧视现象、女性语言的特征以及语言性别歧视与社会的关系。本文一共有四个章节，分别从性别歧视的研究背景、性别歧视在英语语言中的体现，对性别歧视现象的社会语言学分析以及减少英语中性别歧视现象的方法这四个板块进行分析。英语中性别歧视现象的研究，一方面能增进对英美社会文化的了解，另一方面也可以唤醒公众意识，有助于大家更好地使用英语。

Abstract

 Sexism is a very common phenomenon, which is not only reflected in many aspects of our daily life, but also reflected in the use of language. With the development of feminism movement, the increasing number of linguists start to study the sexism in language, the features of female language as well as the connection between the social culture in western society and the phenomenon of sexism. This paper includes four chapters, and analyzes the research background, the phenomenon of sexism in English, the sociolinguistic interpretation of sexism and the elimination of sexism in the English language respectively. On the one hand, the study of sexism in the English language could improve the understanding of western culture. On the other hand, it could arouse people’s awareness so that people are able to use English properly.
