A Study on Naturalism in The Open Boat

摘要

史蒂芬.克莱恩（1871—1900）是美国19世纪自然主义代表作家，其代表作为《海上扁舟》。本文将用三个章节论证《海上扁舟》的自然主义：第一章论证作品中冷漠无情的表现，主要从自然对人类的无情的加以分析。第二章论证人类在自然面前的无能为力。第三章论证即便是以自然主义为主题的作品，其中也有温馨的地方，主要是分析人物性格以及人物间建立的微妙的兄弟情谊。

Abstract

 Stephen Crane (1871-1900) is a representative naturalism writer in America in 19th century. One of his representative works is The Open Boat. This thesis probes into The Open Boat in three chapters. Chapter1 mainly discusses the coldness in the work. To present it, we will conclude into it that Nature’s nonchalant attitude toward human. Chapter2 mainly talks about human’s inadequacy in universe. Though the main theme in this work is naturalism, warmth still can be seen. In chapter3 we will discuss warmth by analyzing characters and subtle brotherhood.
