An Archetypal Study on Sherwood Anderson’s The Egg

摘要

舍伍德·安德森的短篇小说《鸡蛋》讲述了在残酷的工业社会中，“父亲”寄希望于鸡蛋来追求财富从而摆脱贫困立足社会，然而多番苦苦挣扎仍陷入失败。本文试图从原型评论的角度来分析父亲悲剧命运的必然性，并且通过对小说中鸡蛋、畸形及书本杂志的意象原型、父母亲的人物原型和逃离伊甸园的情节原型的分析更好地理解和欣赏这部杰作。

Abstract

The Egg by Sherwood Anderson talks about “father’s” vain struggle to rise from poverty by seeking his fortune through eggs in a harsh industrial society. This paper, from the perspective of archetypal criticism, tries to analyze the inevitability of “father’s” tragic fate and get a better understanding of this masterpiece, The Egg, with the archetypal images of egg、grotesque and books and magazines, archetypal characters of father and mother and archetypal plot of getting out of Eden.
