English-Chinese Translation of Euphemism:A Case Study of Euphemism in English News

摘要

20世纪70年代以来，委婉语的用途越来越广泛，涉及政治经济等多个方面，得到了极大发展，委婉语由此成为一个引人注目的特殊语言现象。委婉语既是一种语言现象，也是一种文化现象，已经渗透于人类生活的方方面面。近几年来，对委婉语的语言学研究越来越多，但是对委婉语的翻译研究相对较少。

本文旨在以新闻英语中委婉语的翻译为例，通过深入的分析讨论委婉语英译汉的常用技巧，细致举例阐明委婉语英译汉的翻译策略，如直译，意译、移植、增译和注释，最后总结出委婉语英译汉的策略。通过对委婉语英译汉翻译策略的研究，希望帮助人们根据不同情况正确使用翻译策略，强调在委婉语英译汉时，尽可能保留源语文化内涵，达到使译文读者理解委婉语内在含义的目的。此外，帮助人们在语言的日常使用中更好的理解委婉语，了解中西方文化，正确使用委婉语，成功进行跨文化交际。通过对委婉语翻译的研究，还能帮助充实目标语的文化内涵。

本文首先介绍了委婉语英译汉的背景，意义和目的，在介绍完委婉语的概念等后，对委婉语的翻译研究尤其是新闻英语中委婉语翻译研究进行了文献综述，然后简单介绍新闻英语，重点举出新闻英语中委婉语翻译的实例讨论委婉语的翻译原则。在此基础上，总结这些策略并细致举例阐明委婉语英译汉的一些翻译策略。最后总结全文。

Abstract

Since 1970s, euphemism has developed greatly with its wide use in many fields, such as politics, economics and so on. Euphemism thus has become a prominent and special language phenomenon. Euphemism, as a kind of language phenomenon, is also a kind of cultural phenomenon. In the past few years, there are more and more studies on euphemism from the linguistic perspective, but relatively few studies on the translation of euphemism.

This paper aims at discussing the strategies of English-Chinese translation of euphemism by analyzing the examples in English news. On this basis, the author summarizes these strategies and discusses in detail these strategies through analyzing some examples, such as literal translation, free translation, transplanting, amplification and annotation. By doing a research on English-Chinese translation of euphemism, the author hopes to help people correctly apply these strategies in different situations. And the author emphasizes that in English-Chinese translation of euphemism, the cultural connotations of source texts should be preserved as much as possible to make the readers understand the connotations of euphemisms. Besides, people can have a better understanding of euphemisms in their daily life. And they can learn Western and Chinese culture better，correctly use euphemisms and communicate successfully in cross-cultural communication. And the study of euphemism translation helps enrich the cultural connotation of the target language.

In the first chapter of the thesis, the author briefly introduces the background, significance and objective of the study on the English-Chinese translation of euphemisms. In the second chapter, the author introduces euphemism through explaining its concept, classifications and so on. In the third chapter, the author makes a literature review of the studies on euphemism translation, especially the studies of euphemism translation in English news. In the fourth chapter, the author gives a brief introduction of news. And then the author mainly illustrates the strategies of English-Chinese translation of euphemism with many examples in English news. On the basis of analyzing these examples in English news, the author summarizes the commonly used strategies in English-Chinese translation of euphemism. The last chapter concludes the thesis.
