The Comparative Study of English and Chinese Compliment

摘要

恭维语的使用是建立和谐人际关系的一个重要手段。在两种语言人民的文化交流中，恭维语是时常使用的最为普遍的语言之一。但是每个民族都有自己不同于其它民族的语言和文化以及行为价值观，这些都具有本民族特有的表现模式和内容，具有鲜明的民族特色。汉语社会和英语社会由于社会结构及文化背景的不同，思维模式一次不同，在恭维语的使用和应答等方面存在巨大的差异。了解这一文化差异不仅有助于人们在跨文化交际中正确恰当地运用恭维语，而且可以避免产生文化冲突。

Abstract

Compliments are commonly used in people’s communication in various languages. Based on the different culture and values, compliments in Chinese and English show their own characters in many ways. The paper makes a brief introduction of the difference in the two languages. By presenting as well as analyzing the different syntax forms, topics, semantic purposes and specific manners, it try to find out the social and cultural rules that impact and control it. And thus, this gives a more comprehensive view and a better understanding of the two compliment patterns, with which people could behave more appropriate and feel more comfortable during the cross-cultural communication.
