Holden’s Predicament in The Catche in the Rye 

摘要

《麦田里的守望者》是讲述青少年心理变化的代表作，以小说主人公的异化为主线，揭示了青少年由少年时代向成人社会过渡时所面临的困惑--一方面抵触成人社会的虚伪，向往自然，想要保留孩童的天真与美好；另一方面，由于自身心性尚未成熟，找不到合适的方法来反抗这个他所厌恶的社会。本文从霍尔顿的角度出发，探索理想与现实间的矛盾，并试着从外部，即学校，社会和家庭朋友和霍尔顿自身，即精神上的反抗，在行动上踟蹰不前,对成人世界虚伪的厌恶以及对孩童的天真近乎执着的向往来分析造成霍尔顿身陷矛盾痛苦的原因。

Abstract

The Catcher in the Rye, the representative work of youth mental changes, reveals the predicament adolescents facing when entering into the adulthood from childhood through Holden’s alienation. On one hand, Holden resists phoniness in adulthood, looks forward to a natural lifestyle and dedicates in protecting children’s innocence and purity. On the other hand, he cannot find a proper and effective way to fight against this disgusting society because of his immaturity. This thesis mainly depicts the predicament Holden has been facing. Futhermore, this thesis is trying to analyze Holden’s predicament in two main aspects: the external aspects, including family, school and social factors and the internal factors, including Holden’s weak personality, the hatred to the phony adulthood and the pursuit to innocence.
