摘要

赛珍珠是美国第一位获得诺贝尔文学奖的女作家。由于她在中国的特殊生活经历以及割舍不断的中国情结，她创作了众多关于中国的文学作品。她对中国的爱恋已经远远超出了她的国界和政治立场。美国学者伊萨克斯曾这样评价过：“在所有喜爱中国人、试图为美国人描述并解释中国人的人当中，没有一个能够做得像赛珍珠那样卓有成效。”她因对中国农民鲜明个性的生动而富有同情心的描写而闻名于世，也让西方人对中国以及中国人有了一个全新的认识。小说《大地》讲述了一对农民夫妇王龙和妻子阿兰在土地上艰苦生存的故事。小说中描写的王龙所具有的凸出品质对于当今社会也有着重要的意义。本文主要研究小说对王龙和阿兰两位角色的塑造，以期在他们身上找出中国农民的共同点，揭示出赛珍珠文学创作的文化意义。

Abstract

The American novelist Pearl Buck was the first female winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in the U.S.A. Because of Buck’s specific life experiences in China as well as her strong affection towards China, she created numerous literary works about China. Her love for China had already been far beyond national boundaries and political stand. According to American scholar Isaacs, among those who loved China and attempted to explain to Americans the Chinese farmers, no one could do better than Pearl S. Buck. She was famous for her vivid and compassionate description of Chinese farmers with their specific characteristics, making the Western people have a new view on China and Chinese people. The novel The Good Earth tells a timeless story about a farmer couple Wang Lung and his wife O-lan struggling to make a living from the earth. The outstanding characteristics of Wang Lung in The Good Earth still have a profound meaning in contemporary society. This thesis intends to study the two main characters Wang Lung and O-Lan in order to find out the common points in Chinese farmers and then reveal the cultural significance in Buck’s literary creations.
