The Different Focuses of Chinese and American Elementary Education

摘要

小学教育，作为基础教育的一个必要组成部分，对于培养和造就人才十分重要。我们都知道，中国和美国在政治，经济，文化和历史方面有着很大的差异。因此，中国和美国的小学教育也有着不同的侧重点。中国的小学教育偏向于应试教育，注重基本的理论知识，注重老师“教授”，而美国的小学教育则是素质教育，注重学生的实践能力和创新思维的发展，注重老师的“引导”。全面地理解这种差异，有助于中国老师对初等教育学有一个全新的认识，进而提高他们的教学方法。

Abstract

Elementary education, as a necessary part of basic education, is of great importance in developing and building people.As we all know, China and America have great differences in the concepts of politics, economy, culture and history. As a result, there are different focuses on Chinese and American elementary education. Chinese elementary education can be called exam-oriented education which focuses on the theory and basic knowledge, and emphasizes on teacher’s “teaching”. Reversely, American elementary education can be called ability-oriented education which focuses on the development of students' practical ability and creative thinking, and emphasizes on teacher’s “guiding”. A comprehensive understanding of the differences would help Chinese teachers throw a light upon elementary education pedagogy and thus, in turn improve their teaching methods.
