A Study of Effects of Feedback on Students' Class Involvement in the EFL Classroom of a Junior High School

Abstract
Active classroom participation is an essential condition to learn English effectively for the junior high school students. Research findings prove that teacher’s feedback is one of the crucial factors that affect students’ class participation and interaction. On the one hand, teacher’s feedback could offer students with assessment, and make students realize the appropriateness or deficiencies of their language behaviors. On the other hand, it directly affects the students’ intrinsic interests and motivation as well as their English learning process.
83 students in 2 classes of the 2nd grade in middle school are involved in the research. On the basis of quantitative and qualitative analysis, it can be seen that the junior high school students’ class participation in English class is indeed affected by teachers’ feedback. The general and simple approval is the type of feedback that the teachers employ most frequently. More positive feedback, implicit corrective feedback from their teachers, as well as the eyes contact, facial expression feedback and gestures are expected by students. When providing feedback, teachers should take factors like language level, attitude, and personality traits of the student into consideration.Feedbacks that encourage and enlighten students serve as an effective instrumental technique for students with lower or intermediate English level. With regard to students with relatively good language competence, positive feedback with elicitation works better for them. As the mediator in class, the teachers should take on their responsibility to enhance the quality of feedback and adopt appropriate feedback to echo with students’ needs actively and tactfully under various conditions.
