On Zhao Yuanren's Contribution in China's History of Translation

摘要

赵元任被誉为现代语言学之父，同时又是一位出色的翻译家，在中国翻译史上理应占有一席之地。作为科学社的创办人之一，他积极开展科学宣传和活动，为中国早期科学翻译做出巨大贡献，在中国翻译界扮演着重要的导师角色。本文论述了赵元任先生对中国翻译界作出的重要贡献，主要体现在其翻译观及译作上。关于翻译观，本文从他对翻译目的与作用的看法，对翻译三大标准“信、达、雅”的看法与应用以及他所采用的翻译方法三方面着手；而译作方面则主要介绍了赵元任先生翻译的经典《阿丽思奇遇记》给中国儿童文学、白话语叙事体带来的影响，确认其在中国翻译史上的重要地位。

Abstract

Zhao Yuanren, known as the founder of modern linguistics, is an outstanding translator at the same time. He deserves a place in China’s history of translation. As the founder of the Science Society of China, he actively launched publicity campaigns and translation activities about science, making great contribution to the early development of scientific translation in China. Through the history of translation in China, he has played an important role as a tutor. The essay mainly discusses contributions Zhao Yuanren made to the Chinese translation field through his principles of translation and his representative translation. In terms of his translation principles, the thesis will study from three aspects: his understanding of purposes and funcions of translation, his view and employment of three principles”faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance” and his approaches of translation. As for his translation, it focuses on the influence of Zhao Yuanren’s translation of  Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in children’s literature and the narrative vernacular Chinese to ensure Zhao Yuanren’s importance in China’s history of translation.
