Word-order Differences of English and Chinese Paired Words

摘要

英语有一种词语搭配结构，两个词由and连接，表示一个完整的概念，叫作成对词，外国学者称之为“连体双胎”。英语成对词的搭配词序不是任意的、自主的、约定俗成的语言形式系统，而是概念化的现实的符号表达，体现了人们对现实世界的认知。 英汉成对词的词序差异反映了英汉民族对现实世界的观察和看法。由于人，自然，社会之间存在着共性以及语言具有着普遍性，英汉成对词在词序方面存在着较多相似点。但是，由于事物的特殊性和文化传承的不同，英汉民族的认知视点各有侧重，致使英汉成对词的词序有时不一致，甚至截然相反。

本课题有助于理解英汉民族的认知思维特征和方式，同时有助于揭示语言和认知的关系。本文将具体阐释英语成对词，也将运用认知视点理论进行研究，从认知视点中的空间视点、时间视点、心理视点和观念视点等方面出发描述和解释英汉成对词的词序差异。

Abstract

English has a word collocation structure where two words are connected by “and”, which indicates a complete concept called paired words, or called “Siamese twins’. The word order of English paired words is not a random, independent and conventional language system but a conceptual and realistic symbol representation, which reflects people’s cognition for real world. Word difference between Chinese and English paired words represents the observations and opinions of Chinese and English of the real world. Because of the generality of human, nature and society and the universality of language, there are many similarities in the word order in Chinese and English paired words. However, due to the special nature of things and the difference of cultural inheritance, the cognitive viewpoints of two nationalities focus differently, which make the word order of Chinese and English paired words inconsistent, even opposite.

This thesis contributes to the understanding of English and Chinese cognitive thinking mode and characteristics and also helps to reveal the relationship between language and cognition. This paper will explain English paired words specifically and use the theory of cognitive viewpoint, includes space viewpoint, time viewpoint, psychological viewpoint and ideological viewpoint and so on, to describe and explain the word-order difference of English and Chinese paired words
