The Comparison of Sexism in Chinese and English

摘要

不管是中方还是西方,语言上的的性别歧视和性别差异是长期存在的热点话题，也是语言学习者和语言使用者关注的焦点，因为语言上的性别差异和性别歧视会对语言学习者和使用者产生重要的影响。这种影响可能是正面的，但更有可能是负面的。如若不对此加以指引和帮助，会对学习语言的人产生误导作用，所以了解和辨析中西方语言上的性别歧视具有重要的意义。本文的研究目的在于借助前人的研究成果，对英汉语言中的性别差异和性别歧视进行对比研究，探究得出其共性与特殊性，改善人们对性别歧视的错误观念，消除性别歧视对语言学习者带来的负面影响，为语言的学习和发展提供和谐平等的环境。

Abstract

Sexism in Chinese and English has been a heated topic for a long time both in China and in western world. It is also the focus of the users of and the learners of Chinese and English because sexism and differences in those two languages have  important effects on them. However, this kind of effects may be positive, and probably be negative. If we do not give those who study these two languages proper instructions, it will bring misleading influence to them. So, understanding and discriminating the sexism between Chinese and English is of great value. Since the last century, the development of a series of Feminist Movement has improved the awareness of social equality and women status a lot. When women are demanding to change their social status, the phenomenon of sexism in language also raises a high concern of scholars both in China and western countries. The thesis is a tentative endeavor to make a contrastive study of the sexism in English and Chinese systematically based on the previous excellent research. And then find the similarities and differences of the sexism between Chinese and English by exploration and investigation. This will be helpful to change people’s concepts about sexism in Chinese and English, then eliminate the negative effects of sexism in those two languages on their learners. Then it will lead to an equal and peaceful learning environment for the study and development of language.
