A Cultural Study on the Origin of the British and American Names

摘要

姓名作为人类社会发展进化的历史产物，与社会文化之间有着广泛而深刻的联系。英美人的姓名作为一种文化载体，是该民族社会、文化的映象，与其历史、宗教、文化传统、价值观念、伦理道德及风俗习惯密切相关。研究英美人的姓名和称呼是了解英美文化、学习地道英语的重要方面。

从英美两国人名起源的特点出发，研究两国人民姓名的来源和取姓选名的方式和习惯，将有利于探讨其历史宗教文化根源，从而提高跨文化交际的敏感性。

Abstract

Name is a historical outcome of the human society evolution which has an extensive and profound relationship with culture. As a cultural carrier, name is a image of national society and culture which is closely related to its history, religion, cultural traditions, values, ethics and customs. Studying the origins of British and American names (first name and last name) is a way to explore Anglo-American culture as well as an important aspect of English learning. 

The origin of British and American names have their particular features. Through analysing culture connotation and the source of names, readers will be able to study its historical and religious origins, so as to improve the sensitivity of the cross-cultural communication.
