Masculinity Crisis in Harry.Potter Series--A Malfoy-based study

摘要

在现代消费文化的背景下，现代人变得浮躁焦虑、麻木虚荣，曾经的伦理道德和价值标准在追名逐利和浮夸攀比中日渐沦丧和退化，处于消费主义重压之下的现代男性更是处于崩溃的边缘，男性气质面临危机。小说则是现实的缩影，本论文通过研究小说《哈利波特》系列中主人公哈利和马尔福的男性气质发现其不同点，发现男性气质危机的存在，并探讨其成因。

小说《哈利波特》系列是以英雄主义体裁为主导的魔幻小说，故事中作为英雄的哈利和作为反派人物的马尔福的人格对比正是两种男性气质的强烈冲击，马尔福的男性气质危机随着哈利波特气质的越来越成熟而相对越来越明显，本文通过对比，借用R.W.康奈尔有关男性气质的一些理论，对小说人物进行各角度分析，揭露其气质危机。

Abstract

Nowadays, under the background of modern consumer culture, people are becoming fickle and anxious, numb and vainglorious, moral principles and standard of values are gradually degenerating and losing in the situation of chasing after the vanity and being engaged in boastfully upward comparison. Under this pressure of consumerism culture, men are more easily to approach the brink of breakdown.Hence, masculinity is facing crisis. Novels are the epitome of reality. This thesis discusses the masculine differences between hero Harry.Potter and the villain Malfoy as well as the causes.

Harry. Potter is a magic series which is based on literature theme of heroism. The powerful impact of two kinds of masculinity in the magic literature is the personality’s differences between hero Harry and the villain Malfoy. Masculinity Crisis of Malfoy is becoming more and more obvious compared with Harry’s masculinity which is getting more and more mature. This essay analyses the two figures in the novels from different angles and reveal Malfoy’s masculinity crisis through contrasts and using references from R.W.Connell.
