英语委婉语的语用功能分析-以英剧《唐顿庄园》为例

Analysis of the Pragmatic Functions of Euphemism: a Case Study of Downton Abbey

摘要

委婉语是一种文雅有礼，避免使人尴尬的表达方式。本文结合《唐顿庄园》影视中的人物对话与实例，以礼貌原则为理论框架，从语用学的角度重点论述了委婉语在具体语境中所实现的避讳、礼貌、美化、幽默与讽刺等几种语用功能。分析影视剧《唐顿庄园》中委婉语的使用特色及其所产生的对话效果，不仅能够增加我们在言语交际中对委婉语的敏感度，更能帮助我们实现礼貌得体的会话交往。此外，在具体的语境中，通过分析人物角色所使用的委婉语特点，我们还能够了解更多的英国文化，体会英国人日常交际中的话语魅力。

Abstract

Euphemism is an elegant and polite way of expression, which avoids making others feel awkward. This essay, based on the perspective of The Politeness Principle, attempts to analyze the pragmatic functions of euphemism through dialogues and examples in Downton Abbey. The analysis mainly focuses on four functions, that is, avoidance of taboo, beautifying, covering up, and humor or satire. Studying the functions of euphemism through dialogues in Downton Abbey can not only increase our sensitivity to euphemism but also help us learn to use polite and decent language in conversations. In addition, the usage of euphemism in this unique British style has put a cherry on the top of cake. It enables us to learn more about the British culture and the charm of the British daily communication.
