A Neglected Translator:In-depth Reasons for Scant Attention to Lu Xun’s Translation Works

摘要

鲁迅不仅是中国历史上杰出的文学家，更是一位多产的翻译家，对其译作的研究能够帮助我们更为全面地了解鲁迅。本文基于鲁迅对不同体裁的外国文学的翻译文本，旨在通过举例等方法对鲁迅翻译的特点及其产生的原因进行分析，最终找寻到鲁迅译作不受重视的深刻根源。鲁迅不同时期、不同体裁的译文直译程度不同，整体趋势渐长，同时还掺杂一些方言。经考察总结出，鲁迅译作不受重视包含以下原因：1)译文可读性低；2)初时名气不足；3)译作体裁小众；4)读者阅读障碍；5)专业知识有限；6)转译有损质量；7)更优译本冲击；8)先觉者的孤独；9)创作影响太大；10)评价标准单一。

Abstract

Not only was Lu Xun a great man of letters in the Chinese history, but he was a productive translator. A study of his translation works will help us know more about him. Based on Lu Xun’s translation works of different genres of foreign literature, the thesis is aimed to analyze the characteristics of his translations and the causes contributing to them by means of giving concrete examples, and to find out the real reasons for the scant attention paid to his translations. His translation works of various genres in different periods reflect various degrees of “literal translation” and contain some dialects. The reasons at which the thesis is aimed are concluded through an analysis as follows: 1. unreadable translation; 2. Lu Xun’s lack of fame in his early career as a man of letters; 3. unpopular genres; 4. readers’ unsound aesthetics; 5. the translator’s limited expertise; 6. negative effects of indirect translation; 7. challenges from better translated versions; 8. illuminatus’s solitude; 9. greater influence of his role as a writer; 10. absence of diverse standards of evaluation.
