A Comparative Study of Chinese and American Cuisine Culture

摘要

从古至今，从东方到西方，人类生命得以延续的最重要最基本的事就是“吃”。饮食作为人类文化的基石，在人类文明的发展过程中起着重要作用。然而，不同文化背景下产生了不同的饮食或饮食习惯，就像谚语中说的“彼之蜜糖，我之砒霜”。

饮食和文化是密切相关的，而且不同的民族创造了属于他们自己的饮食文化。中国与美国，作为东西方的代表国家，对饮食的观念，内容，特色等存在着各自不同的看法。中美饮食文化的不同表现在饮食理念，饮食方式，饮食内容，烹饪方法和餐桌礼仪。而造成这些差异的原因是不同的气候和地理环境，不同的历史，不同的宗教信仰以及不同的生活方式。

中国的饮食文化在走向美国，而美国的餐饮文化也在不断地融入进中国，在这融合与碰撞的过程中，跨文化交际起着至关重要的作用。而对这些差异的研究不仅可以帮助我们更好地适应跨文化交际，还可以让我们更多地了解两个国家的文化，饮食，风俗等等，增强学习英语的趣味性。

Abstract

Whether in old times or in modern times and whether in west or in east, the most important and basic thing for people to survive in the world is food. Food，as the footstone of human culture, plays an irreplaceable role in the development of human civilization. However, there is an old English saying that one man’s meat is another man’s poison, which means different culture and history may lead to different food habits. 

Food remains a close relation with culture and different nations create different cuisine culture. China, as the representative of eastern countries, holds different view on the connotation, content and characteristics from America, the representative of western countries. The differences of cuisine culture between China and America are reflected in the different diet concept, dietary styles, content, cooking methods and etiquettes. The reasons which caused these differences are different climate and geographical environment, history, religious faith and living styles.

The Chinese cuisine culture becomes more and more popular in the USA while the American cuisine culture has integrated into China. The cross-cultural communication plays an important role during the process of interaction. Therefore the study of the differences can not only help people adapt to cross-cultural communication better but also help people know more about the culture, food and customs in these two countries and then enhance interests in learning English.
