A Comparative-linguistic Study of Chinese and English Names

摘要

姓名作为一种特殊而又独特的文化载体，已经存在了几千年。人名从某种意义上来说是社会群体组织为其成员规定的识别性代码或符号，他微缩了人类社会的整个精神世界。一般来说，不同民族的思维方式，道德观念，宗教信仰及语言特征等，无不显现在人名这张人类生命的底板上。姓名是汉英民族共有的文化现象，但民族衍复历史、生态环境、宗教信仰、民情风俗、审美情趣和思维方式的不同，形成了各具特色的姓名文化。

姓名，作为一种文化载体，由于具有悠久的形成历史，又为某一民族所特有，因此，有着丰富的文化内涵，体现了民族文化的特点。本文通过英汉姓名对比研究其异同，旨在进一步了解中西方的文化差异，加强中西方文化交流，有助于我们进一步了解英语民族及其内在文化。

Abstract

Name has been existing for thousands of years as a special and unique cultural carrier. In some way, name is regulated by social group for its members as identification code or symbol, which is a miniature of the spirit world of the whole human society. In general, name is imprinted with the way of thinking, morality, religion and language characteristics of different nations. Name is a common cultural phenomenon both in China and Anglophone countries. However, the different national history, ecological environment, religious beliefs, customs, aesthetic taste and ways of thinking contribute to the formation of the distinctive name culture.

Name that has a long history is unique to a nation as a cultural carrier, therefore, it has rich cultural connotation, reflecting the characteristics of national culture. Through comparing study of the similarities and differences between English and Chinese names, this thesis aims to further understand the cultural differences and strengthen culture exchanges between China and western, which can help us know more about the English nation and its intrinsic culture.
