Color Words and Chinese and Western Cultural Differences Implied in Them

摘要

语言是反映文化的镜子，文化为语言的发展提供了丰富的土壤。研究语言离不开文化背景。颜色词的语义在不同的文化中有着不同的理解。随着全球化的不断加强，各民族的文化相互碰撞与包容，部分颜色词的意义在全球化的大背景下，存在着相同的意思，但是，各民族的颜色词含义还是保留着自己民族语言的特色。随着我们对英语学习的深入，就会发现中文文化与英语文化有着很大的差异，然而根深蒂固的中文思维模式很难让我们去正确使用颜色词，这必然造成跨文化交流中不小的障碍，所以，要深刻全面的理解颜色词，就要更好了解中西语言、文化的异同：历史背景，地理环境，风俗传统以及宗教信仰。通过对比颜色词在不同语言中的含义，分析历史地理，宗教风俗等原因，归纳不同语言文化中颜色词的异同，来指导现实生活中的跨文化交际，提高跨文化交际的能力。

Abstract

Language is a mirror reflected culture, and culture provides a rich soil for language's development. The meanings of color word in different cultures have different understandings. With the strengthening of globalization, all national culture collide and tolerate with each other. Most of color words has a same meaning under the influence of globalization. But, all national groups of color words' meaning still retains the characteristics of themselves nation. With the deepening of our learning of English, we will find there is a big difference between Chinese culture and English culture.However, it is not easy for us to make proper use of color words because of the deeply rooted Chinese thinking modes, and it must become the barriers to cross-cultural communication. So, in order to understand color words more profoundly and roundly, we need to have a better understanding of Chinese and western language and the similarities and differences in culture: historical background, geographical environment, customs, traditions and religious beliefs. 

By comparing the connotations of color words in different languages, analyzing 

reasons  history and geography, religion and custom, etc.,  summarizing the similarities and differences of color words in different language and culture, we can guide the cross-cultural communication in real life and improve the ability of cross-cultural communication.
