A Contrastive Study on Metaphorical Unit Nouns in English and Chinese and Their Translation

摘要

英语中虽无量词，但是有一种词却相当于汉语的量词，语法学家对它有不同的称呼，我们把它叫做“单位名词”。英语中单位名词有一种特殊用法，就是将其隐喻化，我们把它叫“隐喻性量词”。国内外有不少学者对隐喻量词做过研究。论文将通过大量的实例证明隐喻量词的广泛存在，并且对比研究英其在英汉语言中的异同，在此基础上，提出汉英隐喻性量词互译方法，以在文化上、修辞上达到等值。希望这样的翻译策略能给人以启示。

Abstract

There is no specific definition for expressing quantity of amount in English, but a concept of the referents serving as the Chinese quantifiers does exist. Grammarians gave different names to the concept, and we can define it as “unit noun”. With extra attention paid to the metaphors of unit nouns in English, we name the unit nouns “metaphorical unit nouns (quantifier)”. Some scholars at home and abroad conducted different researches on the metaphorical unit nouns. The thesis reveals the existence of the metaphorical unit nouns as well as the similarities and differences of such unit nouns in English and Chinese. Based on the relevant comparative study, the thesis will focus on the metaphorical quantifier translating skills between Chinese and English in order to achieve equivalence in the perspective of culture and rhetoric during translation. It is hoped that the relevant translating strategies can be enlightening.
