Cultural Differences between Chinese and English Greetings

摘要

问候语，作为日常交际的必要手段，在日常沟通和交际中扮演着十分重要的角色。它是人际交往的第一步，是交谈得以实现的基础。由于问候语蕴含着很强的文化特性，因此在跨文化交际中，要特别注意交际双方的文化背景，以免造成误解甚至冲突。本文以文化语言学为理论依托，对中英问候语进行研究，旨在探索中英问候语差异背后隐藏的文化因素。该研究成果可供中英人员初次交往时参照，有助于中英学生在学习彼此语言时注重对彼此文化的习得。

Abstract

As a vital means of daily communication, greetings play a vital role in people’s daily life, which are the first step for personal communication and the basis of completion of communication. Greetings contain strong cultural features, so in cross-cultural interaction, we should pay special attention to the cultural backgrounds of both sides so as to avoid misunderstandings or even conflicts. This paper is based on the theory of cultural linguistics, makes a research of Chinese and English greetings and aims to explore the cultural factors hidden behind the differences of Chinese and English greetings. This research is available for Chinese and English people for the first communication and helps Chinese and English students focus on the acquisition of their own culture in the process of language learning.
