A Comparison of Female Characters in The Great Gatsby 

摘要

《了不起的盖茨比》是20世纪美国小说家弗.司各特.菲茨杰拉德的代表作。小说中三位女性人物深受当时社会文化的影响，无论来自哪个社会阶级，都不曾停止对金钱的追求。因为自身条件有限，便不惜一切代价，利用和依附男人来追求奢侈的生活。本文从女性主义角度来分析，这些非道德的女性形象、性格和她们的悲剧生活与当时所处的父权社会有着密不可分的联系，她们是父权文化的受害者。虽然父权文化仍占主导地位，但是女权主义已经萌芽，“现代女性”反抗父权文化的意识逐渐觉醒和崛起。通过研究《了不起的盖茨比》中的女性人物性格，本文旨在了解父权文化下女性所受到的压迫，以及新时代女性如何珍惜并勇敢追求女性独立自主的地位。

Abstract

The Great Gatsby is always considered Fitzgerald’s masterpiece. The three women in the book are deeply impacted by social culture at that time. This paper focuses on the analysis of these three females characters to conclude that they are always pursuing wealth, no matter which social class they are from. These three women, restricted by their own conditions, have to exploit and rely on men to seek their luxurious life at any cost. This paper draws the conclusion that their characters and tragedy have a close relation with patriarchy by analyzing these three characters, victims of patriarchy, from the point of feminism. Although patriarchal culture predominated at that time, feminism was sprouting, and "modern women" against patriarchal culture and the rise of feminist consciousness is gradually awakening. By studying the female characters in the The Great Gatsby, this paper aims to understand the oppression of the women under the patriarchal culture and to advocate women to pursue independence.
