A Metaphorical Analysis of Physical Setting in Tess of the D’Urbervilles

摘要

在英国文学史上，托马斯·哈代是一位跨世纪的文学巨匠,他的小说为19世纪后期英国小说的发展做出了卓越的贡献。哈代把他的小说分为三类：“性格与环境小说”、“浪漫与幻想小说”、“计谋小说”。他的重要小说全部归类于第一类，1891年出版的《德伯家的苔丝》就是性格与环境小说的一部，也一直被视为哈代的主要代表作。

哈代在《德伯家的苔丝》中大量运用寓意深刻的意象，借助选取的自然背景，渲染氛围，发然联想。哈代所选取的自然背景，大多具有悲剧色彩，烘托人物命运。本文运用隐喻理论举例分析《德伯家的苔丝》中的自然背景意象，旨在更加彻底地诠释这部作品的悲剧性。

Abstract

In English Literature, Thomas Hardy was a distinguished and excellent literary celebrity through the centuries. He specialized in creating novels that made great contributions to the development of English novels in the late of the 19th century. Hardy classified his novels into three categories—novel of characteristic and environment; novel of romance and fantasy; novel of stratagem. And most of his important novels belong to the first category. Tess of the D’Urbervilles published in 1891 was one of the novels of characteristic and environment and was regarded as Hardy’s masterpiece.

Hardy created a lot of meaningful images in Tess of the D’Urbervilles. The physical setting in the story strengthens the tragic atmosphere and leaves large space for readers to imagine. Besides, it could be the symbolization of the character’s destiny. In this paper, the metaphorical analysis of physical setting will be provided and it helps readers better understand the novel.
