马克吐温是美国批判现实主义文学的奠基人，世界著名短篇小说大师，他的后期作品《傻瓜威尔逊》以深沉、辛辣的笔调讽刺和揭露像瘟疫般盛行于美国的惨无人道的种族歧视。

这部作品向我们展示了人的自由选择的特征。一个人形成什么样的本性，不在于他是哪个种族也不在于他属于哪个阶级，而在于他在关键时期做的选择。本文旨在通过解读并举例对比分析小说主人公威尔逊、罗克西以及假汤姆各自在关键时期做的选择，来解读他们命运悲剧性的根源，有助于我们更好地理解这部作品及它向我们展示的时代。

Abstract

Mark Twain is the founder of critical realism literature in the United States and he is also one of the famous short story writers in the whole world. Pudd’nhead Wilson is one of his great works he wrote in his late years, which exposes the inhuman racial discrimination in the United States with the tone of irony.

The novel shows readers the importance of the choices a person makes in his life. Though one’s fate might be greatly influenced by his race and his social status, he still could have better life by the choices he makes when he is at the crossroads in his life. This paper aims to explore the root causes of the protagonists’ tragic life in Pudd’nhead Wilson by analyzing different choices they made, which might be helpful for readers to
