Masculinity Crisis in Rabbit Redux

摘要

约翰·厄普代克(John Hoyer Updike，1932—2009)是美国当代小说家。他最为读者所熟知的作品是其“兔子”四部曲。《兔子归来》是兔子四部曲之二，讲述了主人公“兔子”——哈利·安斯特朗返回家后，妻子反离家跟情人同居；以及他收留嬉皮士女孩吉尔和黑人逃犯斯基特后发生的事变。通过研读《兔子归来》，本文旨在厘清哈利所面临的男性气质危机并分析其成因，继而对小说中故事发生的社会环境进行研究，探讨书中一些事件是如何影响男性气质危机的，如20世纪60年代美国社会上妇女解放运动第二次高潮中出现的性解放运动。

Abstract

John Hoyer Updike is a novelist in contemporary America. He is best known for his “Rabbit” tetralogy. Rabbit Redux is the second in the “Rabbit” tetralogy. This time, when Harry came back home, his wife left and cohabited with a lover. In the next phase, Harry took Jill and Skeeter in. Through reading Rabbit Redux, this essay is aimed at probing into   Harry’s masculinity crisis and the causes of his masculinity crisis. Besides, the social environment will be taken into consideration. For example, sexual liberation movement happened in the USA in the 1960s.
