A Study of Value Orientation in Three Cups of Tea from the Perspective of New Historicism

摘要

和平与发展是当今时代的主旋律，然而恐怖主义却在中东地区悄然滋长。反恐还是维和，全在我们的一念之间。《三杯茶》是一部由美国自由撰稿人葛瑞格·莫顿森所著的超越意识形态屏障并使世界不同肤色的民族为之动容的纪实文学。作品以作者的一个“承诺”而开始，讲诉了作者在巴基斯坦及阿富汗地区难忘的经历和真挚的情感。作者承诺为当地的人民建立属于自己的学校，并为这个承诺贡献自己的一生。本文从新历史主义角度分析该作品的价值取向。首先描写了葛瑞格对于承诺的坚持，通过描写葛瑞格在中东地区的所作所为与中东的硝烟弥漫形成鲜明的对比，其次是他对于贯彻教育为本理念的坚定，因为教育的缺失是中东缓慢发展与矛盾冲突的根源。最后，葛瑞格表达了他对和平与发展的祈愿。最后笔者呼吁中国甚至全世界的志愿者们能为边缘地区教育事业贡献自己的一份力量。

Abstract

Peace and development are the irresistible trend of our era, while terrorism is quietly creeping in middle-east area. To counter terrorism or to keep the peace both exist in the blink of our heart. Three Cups of Tea is a documentary writing which was written by the distinguished American freelance author—Greg Mortenson. The book surpassed the barrier of the ideology and moved different ethnic groups throughout the world. The work started from a “promise”, narrating the writer’s unforgettable experience and the sincere emotion in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The author promised to build schools for the local people, and contributed his life to the promise. The paper would analyze the value orientation from the perspective of the new historicism. First, a vivid description of Greg’s sticking to the promise of building schools is provided, which is a sharp contrast to the smoke-filled environment of middle-east area. Then, Greg’s belief in education is illustrated since he holds that the loss of the education is the root of the underdevelopment and conflicts in middle-east area. Finally, Greg’s wish to the peace. In the end of the paper, the writer appeals to volunteers in China and even all over the world to make efforts for education in the marginal area.
