Culture Connotation and Translation of Color Words

摘要

由于汉语和英语之间存在着文化差异，许多词汇带有不同的民族感情色彩，在交际和翻译过程中可能产生误解。作为民族文化和语言不可缺少的重要部分，颜色词有着独特的语言功能和文化内涵。在中英方文化中有许多种不同的颜色词，因此我们不仅要了解它们本身的基本意义，更要懂得它们不同的象征意义。研究英汉语言中颜色词语的文化内涵及其文化差异有利于培养在语言学习和教学中的跨文化意识。但由于各自民族不同的文化历史背景和审美情趣使得他们在不同民族语言中往往有不同的特点，有些特点甚至恰恰相反。本文以颜色词汇为例分析解读了颜色词汇的不同文化内涵和隐藏的民族情感，以便达到增强语言交际能力、避免文化冲突的目的。

Abstract

Owing to the cultural difference between Chinese and English, many words, loaded with different national emotions and sentiments tend to be misunderstood in the course of communication and translation. As an essential part of language and culture, Color word has its unique language function and cultural connotation. There are many kinds of words about color in Chinese and English cultures, therefore we should not only understand their basic meanings，but also their different symbolic meanings.

A study on the cultural connotations and cultural differences is useful to cultivate trans-cultural consciousness in language study and teaching. The differences are caused by different cultural backgrounds and esthetics. Taking color words for instance, this thesis aims to analyze cultural connotations and hidden national feelings of color words in different countries so as to promote language communication and avoid cultural conflicts.
