摘要

本论文试图分析《天路历程》中出现的象征意义。象征意义是指象征意象的深层含义。在这部小说中，许多人物名字的意象代表包含其具体名字内涵意义的人们。一些地名的意象表示每个人在现实生活中可能遇到的地方或情形。不同角色对比的象征意义显示了不同人的不一样的行为，给我们传达了无声的教育。许多事物和事件的象征意义表现了宗教道义和人生哲理。对小说中象征意义、特点、作用的仔细分析能使人们更好地理解这部小说，人们也能将从中所学到的一些有益的教义运用到实践中去。所有的象征都是生动形象而富有表现力的，它们都深化了小说的主题。

Abstract

The thesis aims to analyze the symbolic meanings emerging in The Pilgrim’s Progress. Symbolic meaning refers to the deep meaning of the image of symbol. In the novel The Pilgrim’s Progress, the images of many characters’ names represent people with the connotation of the specific name. The images of some place names indicate a place or a situation anyone may meet in real life. The symbolic meanings of comparison between different roles refer to different behavior of diverse people which convey silent instructions. The symbolic meanings of many things and affairs show religious principles and philosophies of life. A close analysis of the symbolic meanings, features and functions of the symbols in the novel can make one better understand the novel, and he or she may apply some beneficial principles they have learned to practice. The symbols are vivid and expressive, and they all help highlight the theme of the novel.
