An Analysis of Human Characteristics of Protagonists in Witness for the Prosecution

Abstract

Witness for the Prosecution is one of the masterpieces of the British detective novelist Agatha Christie, and is also a landmark work on dissecting human nature. Agatha Christie describes seemingly simple murder case with dramatic plot, and reveals the cruel human characteristics in the face of interests.

The first part of the dissertation gives a brief review of Agatha Christine's detective novel and remakes of the film Witness for the Prosecution, and it briefly analyzes the social background of Agatha's period of creation, including the jury system in Britain, the economy of Britain after the Second World War and British people's expectations for a better life. The second part of the thesis analyzes their human characteristics and the causes, combined with the character's career, living environment, different levels education, past experiences, and emotional life. The third part analyzes the characters displayed by the main characters through dialogues and scenarios in the movie including Leonard Vole, Christine Vole, and Sir Wilfrid Roberts. The film's plot is ups and downs through the six major reversals in the movie, so that the true appearance of the three main characters is also exposed. They has caused an irreparable situation in order to achieve their own goals and desires. Through the above analysis combined with Agatha Christine’s female consciousness in the detective novels, the last part of this article explores the human nature in Witness for the Prosecution and its practical significance to modern society. In the novels, Agatha Christine demonstrates the exploration of feminine consciousness and human characteristics, as well as the concern for social reality. As a result, her detective novels have profound cultural connotations. Therefore, she has survived during the process of history and is welcomed by the public.

The focus of this dissertation is to explore the human characteristics and practical significance of Witness for the Prosecution. Based on sufficient data and literature review, the author refers to the research in the related field and obtain the professional guidance in terms of writing normativeness and accuracy with the guidance of instructor.
