An Archetypal Exploration of the Book To the Lighthouse

Abstract
Virginia Woolf is one of the most distinguished novelists in the 20th century and occupies all important place in the literary movement called Modernism. Her stream-of-consciousness essays and novels provide an invaluable insight into both her own life experiences and those of women at the beginning of the twentieth century.By the time To the Lighthouse was published, she received widespread and serious attention.Since 1919, when Jung first mentioned the archetype concept of civilization in the book of Instinct and Intention, the international attention at him and research on his theory has flourished ceaselessly. This thesis analyzes the book To The Lighthouse from the perspective of Jung’s archetypal theory. It is made up of three parts. The first part gives a brief introduction of background information. The second part is literature review. The last part of this thesis tries to make focus on Lily Briscoe as a woman artist who must struggle against the ideology represented by the Ramsays and just tries to employ archetypal theory to analyze Woolf’s To the Lighthouse by using archetypes of Demeter and Persephone in Eleusis Mysteries to dig out Lily Briscoe’s inner quest for unity and wholeness.
