A Contrastive Analysis of Chinese and American Dating Advertisement Discourse

Abstract
Dating advertisements not only have distinctive characteristics, but can also reflect a person’s view of marriage and value orientation. In this research, the author collects 50 Chinese dating advertisements and 50 American dating advertisements randomly from Shijijiayuan.com and Match.com respectively. Based on different variables, the study makes data statistics and conducts a contrastive analysis by applying Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory. The results show that Chinese society is typical male-dominant society. Males and females are more equal in American society. Chinese people have high uncertainty avoidance than American people. Chinese is family-oriented and hold collectivism while American hold individualism. The research is intended to find out the differences of cultural values hidden in Chinese and American dating advertisements and deepen people’s understanding of the cultural values in China and America through detailed research and analysis. This research can also help facilitate cross-culture communication.
